Nine Juvenile Inmates Escape From Detention Center in Pennsylvania

Nine juvenile inmates escaped from a secure detention facility in Pennsylvania on Sunday night, authorities said.

The inmates escaped from the Abraxas Academy, a "secure youth treatment" facility in Morgantown, Pennsylvania, around 8 p.m. on Sunday night. The nine inmates are juvenile males last known to be wearing white/gray shirts and shorts.

The Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the escape and have asked the public to call 911 if they see any of the inmates.

The Abraxas Academy is a private, non-profit organization that provides secure treatment and detention services for juvenile offenders. The facility is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and is accredited by the American Correctional Association.

The escape from the Abraxas Academy is the latest in a series of incidents involving juvenile detention facilities in Pennsylvania. In 2021, there were 10 escapes from juvenile detention facilities in the state.

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services is currently reviewing its juvenile justice system and is expected to release recommendations for reform in the coming months.

The escape from the Abraxas Academy is a serious concern and raises questions about the safety and security of juvenile detention facilities in Pennsylvania. It is important to investigate the incident thoroughly and to take steps to prevent future escapes.

Possible causes of the escape:

  • There could have been a security breach at the facility, such as a broken fence or a door that was left unlocked.
  • The inmates may have overpowered staff or used a distraction to escape.
  • The inmates may have planned the escape in advance and had help from the outside.

Possible consequences of the escape:

  • The inmates may pose a danger to the public.
  • The escape could damage the reputation of the Abraxas Academy and other juvenile detention facilities in Pennsylvania.
  • The escape could lead to increased scrutiny of the juvenile justice system in Pennsylvania.

What can be done to prevent future escapes:

  • Conduct regular security assessments of juvenile detention facilities.
  • Provide staff with adequate training and resources.
  • Implement policies and procedures to reduce the risk of escapes.
  • Work with the community to build relationships and trust.

It is important to note that the inmates who escaped from the Abraxas Academy are juveniles. They are still developing and may be more likely to make impulsive decisions. It is also important to note that the vast majority of juveniles who are incarcerated do not escape.
